WHAT IS IT?
The PADI Instructor Development Course is designed to further develop the leadership and teaching abilities of PADI Divemasters to the Assistant Instructor and Open Water Instructor levels. The PADI IDC provides individuals who already possess instructor-level dive theory, role model watermanship and rescue skills, and leadership abilities with additional training that allows them to implement the PADI system in confined water, classroom and open water environments. The IDC also helps instructor candidates gain a complete understanding of PADIs educational goals and philiosophies. The PADI IDC begins with independent learning and encompasses both the assistant instructor course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor program.
Our
goal at Triton Scuba is to prepare instructor candidates to function
as PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors. While we try to provide you with
the knowledge and information you need to pass the instructors exam, the most
important aim of the training is to ensure you become a confident and professional
dive educator. We conduct several IDCs and Assistant Instructor programmes
each year. The courses last for 9 1/2 days. The first 4 1/2 days are the
AI training package, there is then a day during which
we conduct the EFR Instructors course (now a requirement to be a PADI Instructor) and the last 4 days are the OWSI training package.
If you are already qualified as an AI you may participate in the last 4 days
only.
WHERE DOES IT TAKE PLACE? We are extremely fortunate as we can run IDCs and training in two locations. We hold regular programmes in our Portsmouth Dive Centre, however, we have recently ventured out and can offer IDCs at our new dive centre branch in Egypt. The courses in Egypt are run by highly experienced Platignum Course Director, Ed Poore, who has joined our team of instructors. Ed knows Egypt well and has his own dive centre in Dahab. We use his facilities, however, Ed is working for us so your course is through Triton Scuba. Why go to Egypt - the cost is the same, with the exception of flights, but you also get the opportunity to undertake the training in nice warm water and the advantage of seeing how we operate an overseas dive centre.
WHAT DOES IT COST? The IDC is £950. In addition there are other expenses such as registration fees and examination fees to pay. As these can vary for individuals, for full details and a quotation for your individual training package call the dive centre. Note cross overs from BSAC and HM Forces personnel have an additional 2 days of training which is required to ensure success as a PADI Instructor. Contact the dive centre for details and costs.
FIRST AID INSTRUCTOR TRAINING The Emergency First Response Instructor courses is conducted during the middle of the IDC and is a requirement for continuing onto the OWSI part of the IDC programme (unless you already have a first aid instructor qualification with another agency). It gives candidates a break but also reinforced the teaching techniques that have been introduced during the AI phase of the IDC. These courses enable candidates to teach EFR Primary and Secondary Care (essential to teach a full rescue course), AED, and Care for Children. Their is an additional cost for the EFR Instructor qualification and registration.
Details about the next IDC being conducted at Triton Scuba can be found by clicking on the link to the right. To participate on the IDC you must be certified as a PADI Divemaster or hold a leadership level certification with another recreational diver training organization.
