The Scientific Diving Techniques programme is a unique qualification that has been written by Triton Scuba specifically for University of Portsmouth students. When taken as an option it could be worth 10 credits towards your university learning. The course has been approved by the Health and Safety Executive, PADI and the University, and Triton Scuba are the only dive centre that can offer this course. It is not a commercial diving qualification but it is designed to give students an insight into the world of commercial and scientific diving. Whether you are training to be an engineer or a marine biologist, the chances are that at some stage in your future careers you will come into contact with a real diving project. As well as being great fun, this course will give you a better idea of how to work with divers in the real World.
COURSE OVERVIEW
The course is run over two weekends and there are four courses each year between March and June. During the first weekend you will cover the theory behind professional diving. We will also put you in the pool to do some refresher training and introduce you to underwater construction and lifting techniques. The course broken down into a number of modules covering a wide range of topics:
• Diving at Work Regulations
• Risk Assessment
• Project Planning
• Diving Illnesses and Treatment
• The Conduct of Scientific and Commercial diving tasks
• Project Reporting
During the second weekend you get the opportunity to put theory into practice and go diving. During this component of the programme you will undertake a range of simulated scientific and commercial tasks. You will plan them, coordinate them and be involved in all aspects of conducting the dives safely and in accordance with the regulations.
“I didn’t qualify for credits but did this course out of interest. Great fun, absolutely brilliant.”
Simon Lamb, Business and Management
At the end of the training you will be required to produce a written report which is the basis for your final mark if you are taking the course for credits. On successful completion of all elements of the programme you will be awarded the unique PADI Distinctive Speciality rating as a Scientific Diving Techniques diver.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The minimum entry requirement for this course is PADI Open Water, although it is recommended that students are qualified to PADI Advanced Open Water or equivalent from another certifying agency. We are not teaching you how to dive during this course and you are expected to be confident and current underwater. Therefore you will need to have proof of being diving within at least 2 months prior to the start of the course.
“I decided to opt for the diving units this year ..... It’s a fantastic programme”
