Over
the past few years, marine communications have been revolutionized by the
introduction of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).
This system is designed to ensure that ships anywhere can communicate with
a rescue co-ordination centre. Whilst yachts and small craft are not
required to carry radios, if they do, they are required to be competent and
qualified to use it. The mobile phone has proved extremely effective
in inshore waters but they are still no substitute for marine VHF as they
lack the ability to participate in an open network or recieve and transmit
broadcast messages. With hundreds of thousands of users sharing just
59 international channels, there have to be rules and procedures. This
half day course covers those rules and procedures with practical training
based on computer simulation. The course covers the following topics:
The cost of the course is £69 which includes the certificate of competence.
